About Bangalore Rose Onion
Bangalore Rose is a small, deep pink onion with markedly higher pungency than standard red varieties, grown principally around Karnataka. It holds a GI (Geographical Indication) tag, and buyers in Malaysia and Singapore in particular specify it by name rather than treating it as interchangeable with ordinary red onion.
The bulbs are small (typically 20–35 mm) which makes them labour-intensive to grade but well suited to the dishes they are bought for, including sambar and pickling applications where whole small onions are used. Pungency and colour are the properties buyers judge, not size uniformity alone.
Supply is more seasonal and more concentrated than mainstream red onion, so early indication of volume genuinely helps. Send us your destination port and quantity and we will confirm availability against the current crop.
Grading is where the cost sits. At 20 to 35 mm the bulbs are small enough that sorting is labour-intensive relative to the tonnage handled, which is reflected in the price and in a wider size tolerance than you would expect on a standard red onion contract. Agree that tolerance explicitly rather than assuming the band you nominate will be met exactly.
Buyers specify Bangalore Rose because a substitution is obvious to the end user. Its pungency and deep pink colour are what the dishes it goes into rely on, particularly in sambar and pickling applications where the onion is used whole and its character is not masked. If a supplier offers ordinary small red onion as an equivalent, it is not one, and your customers will notice before you do.
