About Black Seedless Grapes
Black seedless grapes from Nashik are led by Sharad Seedless, a variety with dark, firm berries and a sweet flavour, bought in Asian, Gulf and European markets alongside green grapes. Other black seedless types can be sourced subject to the crop. Harvest follows the same February to April window as the green varieties.
Colour is what separates good black grapes from poor ones. Uneven colouring, with red or pale berries mixed into a dark bunch, is the most common complaint, and it usually traces back to fruit picked before it had fully coloured. Write your colour requirement into the contract alongside a minimum berry diameter in millimetres and a minimum sugar level in °Brix. The EU marketing standard requires at least 14 °Brix for seedless varieties.
Bloom, the natural waxy coating on the berry, is worth asking about too. It is a sign of careful handling, since rough packing rubs it off, and the EU standard requires Extra Class grapes to have their bloom virtually intact. Fruit is packed in punnets or bags inside cartons of around 4.5 to 5 kg, pre-cooled after harvest and shipped by reefer close to 0°C.
EU-bound lots come from GrapeNet-registered plots, with residue testing at an APEDA-approved laboratory, an Agmark grading certificate and a phytosanitary certificate. For other destinations, name the residue standard you buy against at the enquiry stage.
On arrival, look first at colour and at the bottom of the carton. Loose berries collected there point to rough handling or over-mature fruit, and a dull, rubbed surface shows the bloom has been lost in packing. Record pulp temperature and stem condition as well, with photographs, and agree beforehand who inspects and how quickly, so any claim rests on a report rather than an argument.
