About Thompson Seedless Grapes
Thompson Seedless is the backbone of India’s grape exports. In Nashik it is grown both as the original variety and as Indian selections such as Sonaka and Tas-A-Ganesh, which carry longer, larger berries. All are green, seedless and crisp, the profile supermarkets in Europe and the Gulf buy for eating fresh. We supply export-grade fruit from the Nashik belt during the February to April harvest.
Berry size is the specification that most affects price. Buyers usually state a minimum diameter in millimetres, and larger calibres cost more because they are a smaller share of each harvest. Sugar matters as much: the EU marketing standard requires at least 14 °Brix for seedless grapes, and many retail programmes set a higher figure of their own. Fruit picked early to catch a price window can look right and still fail on Brix, so agree how and where it will be measured.
Green grapes show handling faults sooner than black ones. Browning stems, loose berries shaken off the bunch and bleaching from sulphur dioxide all show clearly on a pale berry, which is why packing practice matters. Bunches are trimmed of damaged berries, packed in punnets or bags inside cartons of around 4.5 to 5 kg, and pre-cooled quickly after picking so the stems stay green.
For EU buyers, every lot comes from a plot registered on APEDA’s GrapeNet system and must pass residue testing at an APEDA-approved laboratory before export, with an Agmark grading certificate and a phytosanitary certificate. For other markets, tell us the residue standard you buy against and we will source and test to it.
Check the fruit the day it is discharged, because grape claims are judged on condition at arrival. Pulp temperature, stem colour, loose berries collected at the bottom of the carton and any bleaching around the stem are the four things worth recording, with photographs, against the contract specification. Agree in advance who inspects and within how many hours, so a dispute turns on a report rather than on recollection.
